Remember, the objective is to build sustainable eating and activity habits to support the kind of life you want. The yearly gain/loss estimator helps illustrate the effect of a change in daily energy intake or expenditure over the course of a year. The key idea is this: to lose a pound of weight takes an expenditure of 3500 calories. The table below shows the amount of weight lost over a year by either reducing the amount of energy taken in, or by using more energy through exercise and activity.
