FBI Special Agent Fitness Test

The work FBI Special Agents perform can be physically demanding, and at times, an Agent's fitness may mean life or death, for them, their colleagues and potentially you or me! The FBI's test assesses fitness for trainees in four areas:

  • The number of sit-ups performed in one minute
  • Time in a 300-meter sprint
  • Maximum number of push-ups (untimed)
  • Time in a 1.5 mile run

To pass the test, the trainee must have a cumulative score of twelve points with at least one point in each of the four events. The FBI scoring system is not age adjusted and it has categories where one could earn a negative score! (Remember, this is the test for trainees, that are generally younger individuals.)

The FBI sit up protocol involves laying on the floor with the hands behind the head with fingers interlaced. Knees must be at a 90 degree angle, and feet are held by a partner. To perform the exercise, bring the torso up until a 90 degree angle is achieved (back is perpendicular to the floor). To return to the starting position, the top of both shoulders must touch the floor. This is a continuous motion test.

For the push up test, the hands should be one to two hand widths beyond the shoulders and elbows away from the body. Feet are not more than 3 inches apart and toes are touching the floor. Lower oneself until the arms are parallel to the floor. This is a continuous motion exercise.
